Snacking between meals is often seen as a bit of a no-no, but done right, snacking can actually be good for you.

Snacking can:

  • Help you avoid overeating at your next meal
  • Stop you from bingeing on junk
  • Add extra nutrition to your diet
  • Control your appetite
  • Stop energy slumps

“Snack foods” have given snacking a bad name 

One of the reasons snacking is seen as ‘bad’ is because we’ve come to associate snacking with ‘snack foods’, a marketing term used by the big food companies to sell us highly processed and packaged food often low in nutrition and high in carbs, unhealthy fats and sugar.

These kinds of snacks don’t make you feel full and can cause a vicious circle of snacking by creating a blood sugar spike that gives you a short burst of energy, followed by a slump where you feel hungry again.

Good snacking is therefore all about the snack choice. It means eating a small portion of something nutritious, preferably high in protein or fibre to make you feel full, and only snacking when you’re actually hungry. (Of course, there’s also room for the occasional good quality choccy treat!)
