Caraway seeds (carum carvi) are also known as meridian fennel, or Persian cumin. The plant is a member of the carrot family and is similar in appearance to others in this genus. They are commonly grown in Asia, Europe, and Africa, and are widely used in many cuisines. The seeds are brown & crescent-shaped, only about 2mm long, with five pale ridges. For such a little seed they are extremely aromatic with an earthy, anise flavour.
How to Use:
Caraway seeds can be used to impart a warm, mildly aniseed flavour to beverages, baked goods, cheese and a variety of sweet or savoury recipes. Add to hearty soups and hotpots, rice dishes and Indian curries. Perfect for home-made sauerkraut, preserves and pickles. Delicious in baked goods – try rye bread, spiced ginger biscuits or cheese pastry twists. Or try some in herbal teas and chai blends.
Caraway seed oil is also used as a fragrance component in soaps, lotions, and perfumes. Caraway is also used as a breath freshener and is sometimes found in toothpaste.
