    Switch unhealthy food items for more nutrient-dense options. Want to know our favourite quick and easy switches? Simply replace table salt with Australian pink salt, margarine with real butter, iceberg lettuce with leafy greens and regular vegetable oil with olive oil or coconut oil.

    When buying food in bulk, you reduce your plastic waste significantly, enjoy more fresh food and avoid any unnecessary food waste.

Together with Lee, we’re trying to change the perception that cooking fresh, nutrient-rich meals is complicated and time-consuming. With a few simple tips from us and this delicious Smoked Salmon Living Lentil Bowl from Lee, you’ll learn how easy it is to cook a wholesome and healthy meal. Plus, you can pick up the lentils, spices and extra-virgin olive oil from your closest The Source Bulk Foods.

     

    Serves: 2

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
    • 1 small brown onion, chopped
    • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped
    • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
    • 50g brown lentils, rinsed
    • 375mL chicken stock or filtered water
    • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
    • 1 handful coriander, chopped
    • 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed
    • 100g baby English spinach leaves
    • 100g smoked salmon
    • 35g snow pea sprouts
    • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste (optional)
    • Squeeze lemon juice

     

    METHOD

    1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
    2. Add the onion, garlic and ginger, then cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened.
    3. Add the lentils, stock or water and cumin.
    4. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20–25 minutes, until the lentils are tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
    5. Stir through the coriander and capers.
    6. Arrange all the ingredients in serving bowls, then season with a grind of pepper (if using) and finish with a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • Peruvian Chilli Chocolate Scorched Nut Pizza

If you’ve been following our Spring Cleaning blog series, you’ll know Alexx is an inspiration for us here at The Bulk Food Source and we had to share her delicious Peruvian Chilli Chocolate Scorched Nut Pizza recipe, which is perfect if you need a sweet treat fast! Plus, you can pick up all the ingredients from The Source Bulk Foods. Win, win!

     

    Makes: 1 pizza

    INGREDIENTS

    • 60mL melted coconut oil
    • 2-3 tablespoonsraw cacao
    • 2-3 tablespoonsmaple syrup, rice-malt syrup or honey (if using honey, just add 1 tablespoon)
    • 1 handful scorched, toasted or dehydrated nuts of choice
    • 1 tablespoon bee pollen (optional)
    • ¼ teaspoon vanilla powder (optional)
    • Pinch salt
    • Pinch dried chilli flakes

     

     

    METHOD

    1. Line a round cake tray or dish with parchment paper.
    2. Mix oil, cacao, syrup, salt and vanilla in little bowl until well combined. Pour onto parchment.
    3. Chop nuts roughly and sprinkle over.
    4. Sprinkle bee pollen and chilli if using.
    5. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or freeze for 15 minutes.
  • Natural Detox Juice

    This Natural Detox Juice recipe comes from Kate Duncan, the deputy editor of WellBeing magazine. If you can’t find fresh ginger or turmeric, simply use a teaspoon each of the dried/ground powder found at The Source Bulk Foods.

     

    Serves: 1-2

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 green apple, core removed and chopped
    • ½ pineapple, cored and skinned
    • 3 kale leaves, stem removed
    • 1 small knob ginger
    • 1 small knob turmeric
    • 1 lemon, skin off and quartered
    • Black pepper, to serve

     

    METHOD

    Process all ingredients in a juicer. Pour into a glass, sprinkle with black pepper and drink.
